She sells seashells by the seashore. The shells she sells are surely seashells. So if she sells shells on the seashore,I'm sure she sells seashore shells.

The still popular tongue twister provides an entrée to this book, but there is much more on the shoreline than just shells. A great length of the coastline of eastern England is being changed almost daily due to extensive erosion of the soft nature of its beaches and cliffs, whether it is chalk or sandstone in nature, and this reveals new features on a regular basis, be they flora, fauna or geological. The greater variety of seashells that the lady above purveys are to be found on more rocky coasts and these are all to be detailed in the Student's Guide to the Seashore, together with everything else to be found there, from Seaweeds to Chordata. Not only are these features described and analysed in great detail, but they are also illustrated in exceptionally clear line drawings that have significant elements annotated.

In addition to the biological text giving information on the organisms of the shore and their biology and ecology, the book has been designed as a guide to the identification of the common and widespread organisms. This is achieved by arranging them in phylogenetic sequence with an illustrated explanatory chapter at the beginning of the volume. So, Group 1 consists of Plants and Plant‐like Animals with drawings pointing the reader to the appropriate chapter; Group 2 is Worm‐like Animals, “varying in shape from long and rounded to flat and leaf‐like” up to Group 9 which is Fishes. In the main body of the work, each species is given a detailed description and analysis, with scientific terminology kept to a minimum. Each chapter is concluded with a short list of specialist references, others being found in the extensive bibliography of research papers and books. This new edition includes 32 pages of colour images, data from the latest research on the biology of inter‐tidal organisms and an extensive glossary of scientific terms, while the taxonomy has been updated to reflect recent changes based on molecular research

Susan Fish is a Research Associate and John Fish is the former Director of the Institute of Biological Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Science at Aberystwyth University. They have many years’ experience of research and teaching in marine biology and this volume, now in its third edition, draws on this work. Altogether, the Student's Guide to the Seashore is an essential purchase for larger general collections as well as for those specialising in marine biology. However, beware, since the second edition is still being sold by some online merchants at £42, whereas the paperback third edition is very good value at £35.
