The Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is part of the US Department of the Interior whose other agencies include the National Park Service, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Bureau of Land Management and the Office of Surface Mining. The Department of the Interior website describes its mission as “protecting America's great outdoors and powering our future”. FWS is deeply involved in protecting the natural landscapes and features of the country; it is in fact the agency that provides information about the “extent and status of the Nation's wetlands”. This critical function is a necessary precursor to protecting wetlands.
