There has been no comprehensive biographical dictionary of the Royal Navy since 1849, and the author of the present work, himself a retired naval officer, has spent the last ten years in filling the gap for the period 1900-2000. He calculates that during that time, 250,000 officers in total have served in the Navy; it being impracticable to cover all of them, he intends to include, in a series of six volumes, all officers down to and including the rank of Commander, with a selection of those of lower rank.
