The publisher of Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal is issuing an Expression of Concern for the following article, Paul Griffin, Martien Lubberink, Tom Stannard; Extreme weather events in New Zealand: Financial market-related impacts. Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal 2025; Link to Extreme weather events in New Zealand: Financial market-related impacts Link to the cited article. It has come to our attention that the article employs the Aotearoa New Zealand Extreme Weather Event (EWE) database metadata contrary to the usage restrictions issued by its creators, which state that “Due to continual improvements in observational data sets and methods for identification and documentation of EWEs over the period of this database, more recent years contain a larger number of entries. As such, users of this database are cautioned and urged NOT to infer any annual or decadal trends through the period of the database” [Metadata_EWE_V.1.0.0; Kreft Peter, Macara Gregor, Noble Chris, Smith-Trevor Carey, Bodeker Greg, and Vishwanathan Gokul. (2023). Extreme Weather Event database over Aotearoa New Zealand (V1.0.0) [Data set]. Zenodo. Link to Extreme Weather Event database over Aotearoa New ZealandLink to the cited article]. It should also be noted that although one of the database owners, Greg Bodeker, commented on an earlier version of this study as acknowledged in the article, he wishes to emphasise that he does not endorse or support the research presented here. The article’s findings, theoretical contributions and conclusions currently remain intact; the journal and publisher have, however, taken the decision to publish an Expression of Concern to alert readers to this issue and as trust in the content is central to the integrity of the publication process.
