Purpose – to study the relationship between strategy and new technology by examining how new technologies are created and introduced over significant time periods and illustrating the issues with particular reference to the stent industry. Design/methodology/approach – a review of the literature of technological innovation and the influence of technology strategy designed to bring such technologies to practical development is presented. Describes the development of a 2×2 conceptual frame model based on the distinction between ”planned” versus ”emergent” strategy and ”latent”versus ”sensible” technology and the generation of four distinct domains that are termed label ”development”, ”capitalization”,”creation” and ”cultivation”. Reports the results of applying the ”creation” part of the model in a case history of the stent industry, involving a technique for inserting small structures, or stents, into arteries to clear blockages.Article Type: Case studyISSN:0953-7325Reference: 38AR423
