9th Annual Colloquium on the European Academy of Business in Society (EABIS)– Corporate Responsibility and Emerging Markets
September 21-22, 2010, St Petersburg, Russia
This year the Colloquium will focus on exploring how corporate responsibility(CR) is understood and applied in emerging market contexts and cultures –by old and new multinationals – and its viability as a framework for tackling critical challenges ahead.
Key issues are:
The current financial crisis has shattered the dominant (Western) theories that underpinned the regulation, short-termism and high-risk behaviour of institutions and individuals within global markets. This has created a vacuum of authority within which emerging nations have claimed a greater say in defining global economic governance – witness the shift from the G8 to the G20 Group.
In recent years, the combined effects of economic and social globalization have altered the traditional balance of power between “developed” and“emerging” nations. Access to capital, knowledge and talent have levelled the global playing fields on which firms – old and new –must compete for profit, advantage and market share. As a result, businesses from these emerging markets are vigorously challenging the hegemony of their older rivals.
The growing influence of emerging markets and their leading companies has not come without a cost. Increased economic and geopolitical weight has been accompanied by a greater burden of responsibility to address complex social,environmental and governance issues. Their governments and firms are now key actors in the pursuit of longer-term sustainability and stability within a market capitalism system.
Against this background, the 2010 Colloquium will explore how CR is understood and applied in emerging market contexts and cultures – by old and new multinationals – and its viability as a framework for tackling critical challenges ahead.
We are therefore inviting contributions from business, research, policy bodies and interested stakeholders that address, among others:
emerging economies as key actors in shaping global governance;
new multinationals as agents of change in a post-crisis economy;
the role of business in emerging markets: strategy, stakeholders and partnerships; and
the challenges for management systems and development.
