Describes how US manufacturers are applying a combination of manufacturing technologies, manufacturing processes and employee education in order to promote a new era of US manufacturing that cannot be easily replicated by competitors abroad. Explains the nature of advanced manufacturing, with particular reference to the use of high-tech processes (nanotechnology, direct digital fabrication, micro manufacturing), frequently involving factory automation, or the development of innovative products. Illustrates these points with particular reference to the efforts of the Corning, Inc. Harrodsburg, plant in Kentucky, which previously produced LCD glass for Asian customers, but where demand for larger-sized glass made it impractical to ship overseas. Explains that Gorilla Glass has become one of the company’s fastest-growing products and is currently produced exclusively in Harrodsburg, although that is expected to change shortly when a Corning plant in Japan begins producing the specialty glass used in mobile electronic devices.Article type: Viewpoint ISSN: 0039-0895 Reference: 39BB441
