Despite considerable effort and significant improvements over the past decade, the productivity and competitiveness of UK industry are under even more pressure. Whilst UK industry has become much more dynamic, it still fails to match the competitiveness of its main overseas competition. For instance, there is general agreement that UK manufacturing productivity is still 20‐30 per cent behind the USA, and the gap with France and Germany is not closing. Essentially, for every step forward made by UK companies, major competing nations seem to have taken two.
