Talk of keeping track of where someone or something is by “tagging” and many people think of the fight against crime. Convicted thieves or hooligans can be “tagged” these days as an alternative to sending them to jail. Expensive cars can also have a transponder (“tag” for short) fitted so, if stolen, the police can track where it is.
