Purpose

To present a knowledge management (KM) model for research and development organizations and discuss how to employ it for their innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper derives generic elements for effective KM implementation through literature reviews, and then develops an integrative KM model for enabling R&D innovation, before analyzing the case of Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT), which has used this model.

Findings

The shortening product life of high‐tech goods, brought about by an ever‐present need to keep ahead of the competition, has led to an ever‐greater reliance on the output from research and development teams.

Originality/value

The proposed R&D KM model and analysis of the case of SAIT may be employed as significant benchmarking information in other R&D organizations.
