Purpose – To advise finance directors (FDs) on playing a more strategic role. Design/methodology/approach – Identifies the skills modern FDs need for their increasingly strategic role and suggests some ways to acquire them,e.g. a refresher course for strategic analysis skills, reading up the strategic aspects of shareholder value creation theory to link strategy to financial numbers etc. Illustrates a visual tool for generating options, the various stages of decision-making and the skills FDs need to facilitate each of them. Discusses some practical steps to help improve skills and change the FD mindset(e.g. project managing a non-financial area of strategic implementation),pointing out that strategy implementation requires skills in leadership, change management and PR management.
