Purpose – discusses Roadchef’s (UK motorway services firm)approach to human resource management, focusing on its recent drive to improve the company’s image as an employer and to make it a place that high-calibre staff will want to work for. Design/methodology/approach – quotes from an interview with Keith Lockton, Roadchef’s HR director, in which he discusses the firm’s recent recruitment campaign, and its new graduate training scheme for managers. Notes that all the employees who work in the franchises that operate on Roadchef’s premises, such as WH Smith, are employees of Roadchef and describes how the company handles the complexity this brings to matters such as pay and training.
