Purpose – Analyses the development of entrepreneurship in China. Design/methodology/approach – Divides China’s entrepreneurs into first and second generations and draws attention to the development of a third generation. Examines the characteristics of the first generation (now more than 45 years old); outlines their shared experiences and how they witnessed first hand the difficulties of shifting from a planned to a market economy. Puts forward how they founded the first groups of Chinese firms run on the notion of market competition and examines those factors that led to their success. Homes in on how the second generation (mostly in their 30s and early 40s); looks at how they differ from the first generation and outlines, among other things, how while they have become more skilled in dealing with overseas capital markets,Chinese firms still have problems globalizing. Suggests that the third generation of China entrepreneurs must provide strategies that will enhance the global competitiveness of their firms; provides the example of Lakshmi Mittal of Mittal Steel as an entrepreneur that Chinese entrepreneurs would do well to copy. Originality/value – Provides a history of entrepreneurship in China from the 1990s onwards. ISSN: 0014-7591 Reference: 37AX114
