Purpose – Develops an ecological framework for conceptualizing dynamic manufacturing strategies. Design/methodology/approach – Uses models from ecology and earth sciences to develop a conceptual framework involving dynamic representation of strategy in terms of the time-varying resource allocation patterns between the firm and its manufacturing function. Identifies a strategy, referred to as evolutionarily stable manufacturing strategy (ESMS), which prevents the invasion of any mutant strategy under the influence of natural selection. States that the development of formal methods and approaches to capture the dynamics of manufacturing strategy using ESMSs can enable firms to make shifts from one strategy to another, setting targets that enable the mobilization of resources to leapfrog between strategies. Evaluates the model empirically using longitudinal data from a random sample of 30 firms operating within the North American semiconductor manufacturing industry.Article type: Research paperISSN: 0025-1909Reference: 38AT384
