Purpose – Studies the sequence between diversification and divisionalization in large Spanish companies in terms of the relationship between corporate organizational strategy and structure. Design/methodology/approach – A review of the literature of the relationship between organizational strategy and organizational structure is presented to provide the basis for the research hypotheses. Describes the study which investigated whether diversification strategy facilitates subsequent divisionalization (structure follows strategy), or multidivisional structure leads to a diversification strategy (strategy follows structure). Reports the results of a questionnaire survey, involving the chief executive officers (CEOs)of 100 Spanish companies (18.1 percent response rate) to gather data relating to organizational strategy-structure relationships. Notes that the questionnaire survey was in two parts, the first part focusing on strategy, and the second part shedding light on the nature of the organizational structure.Article type: Research paperISSN: 0143-2095Reference: 38AZ052
