Reports research that has investigated the reasons for China’s economic success. Identifies three government policies that have had a major influence on China’s economic growth – rural reform in the 1970s, urban reform in the 1980s, and the decision to open China up to the global economy from the 1990s onwards. Looks at each in turn, discussing what was done and assessing the impact on China’s industrial and trading capacity. Indicates the strengths and also the weaknesses within the economy but sees China as becoming increasingly open and integrated in the global economy.Article type:ViewpointISSN: 0955-6419Reference: 40AG220
