The range of Balluff opto-sensors available in the UK through precision switching specialist Multiswitch has been extended, with the introduction of the BKT range of scanners for colour and mark detection (see Plate 2). Designed primarily for the detection of coloured registration markings, usually to trigger a cutting or folding operation, the scanners have widespread applications throughout the packaging, printing and distribution industries.
Enclosed within an industry-standard metal housing, the BKT claims to be extremely user-friendly,with an integral micro-processor adjusting all settings automatically. Initialisation is carried out by the operator using two push-buttons, with the micro-processor then selecting either red or green light and loading the correct values to detect the mark.
By using two switches within the standard unit, both pulse stretching and push-button disable can be selected, while the cable version may be loaded with four different values, simplifying what would otherwise be a complex setting-up operation. Sensing distances of up to 9mm are accommodated by the standard model, although the addition of a lens increases the working range to 18mm.
The BKT series is available from Multiswitch in two configurations, for either lateral or longitudinal sensing applications. Both may be supplied with either an M12 plug,or pre-fitted with three metres of cable.
