New load-sensing washers feel the pinch

Keywords

For measuring clamping forces in screwed fastenings, or evaluating the force between any two components, Maywood Instruments has developed a new range of load washers that can be customised to meet the individual requirements of almost any application(see Plate 12).

The washers utilise strain gauge sensing principles and can be supplied with digital indicators to form complete, easy-to-use measuring systems. The transducers can accurately determine the correct torque tightening regime for screwed fasteners in critical applications or, when a load washer is left assembled in a joint over time, observe long-term changes in compression.

Thanks to a compact design, Maywood load washers can be easily installed where space or weight is a crucial factor, often in places where conventional load cells are too large. The transducers are generally manufactured from stainless steel and are available with diameters from 6mm upwards. Since the washers are customised to the exact dimensions of each application, no design compromises are necessary and accuracy levels better than 0.25 per cent are possible.
