NDC Infrared Engineering is launching a new integrated system for continuous monitoring and control of production of non-wovens on stand 2631 at INDEX 1999. The 6100 Non-Wovens System combines gamma backscatter and non-contact infrared technology with a computerised profile display unit, to offer on-line measurement of basis weight and moisture (see Plate 5). The system is the first integrated package capable of making both of these measurements - critical to non-woven production - using backscatter (single-side measurement) sensors.

Continuous on-line measurement of critical process parameters is the only way that manufacturers of non-wovens can ensure consistency across and along the web. By optimising production through close control of line speed and dryers,leading producers have been able to make significant reductions in process costs and improvements in product quality. The new integrated, backscatter system from NDC Infrared Engineering makes it easier than ever before for manufacturers to take advantage of the process benefits of on-line monitoring and control.
The 6100 Non-Wovens System consists of gamma and NIR sensors, positioned usually at the exit of the dryer, for direct, continuous measurement of basis weight and moisture content. Measurements are logged and displayed by the system's profile display unit and can be used for process monitoring only, for direct closed-loop control of the dryer, or as part of a wider plant control system.
Sensors are mounted on ruggedised stainless steel 316 scanning frames installed directly below (or above) the web. Each sensor traverses the width of the machine taking a continuous measurement of the product passing above (or below) it. The single-sided backscatter measurement technique, makes the system much easier to install - especially as a retrofit to existing lines - than beta transmission systems, for example, which require equipment on both sides of the web.
A powerful 32-bit microprocessor-based profile display unit provides all the system control and operator interface functions. It combines an advanced data collection and analysis capability with intuitive touch-screen control and highly graphical display for ease of use on the factory floor. System functions include scanner control, target settings, display options, recipes, audio and visual alarms and a sophisticated reporting capability.
In addition to the moisture and basis weight measurement sensors, an optional extra forward-scatter (transmission) NIR sensor may be mounted at the wet end of the process and integrated into the system, for direct measurement and control of binder content.
