MIT director to keynote IPC AMRC/TMRC meetings

Author and MIT director Dr Neil Gershenfeld will keynote the IPC June Assembly Market Research Council(AMRC)/Technology Market Research Council (TMRC) meetings. Dr Gershenfeld will forecast the demands printed wiring board (PWB) and electronics assembly companies will be facing from technological innovations in the coming years. The AMRC/TMRC meetings are being held June 23-24, 1999, at the J.W. Marriott in Washington, DC.

"This is not a futurist presentation, where the presenter suggests what could happen in the coming years", says IPC director of market research Carla Wehrspann. "Dr Gershenfeld will give the audience an accurate picture of how technology will actually impact the PWB and electronics assembly industries based on his own writings and research."

In his latest book When Things Start to Think (Henry Holt & Company, Inc. 1998), Dr Gershenfeld writes about the cutting-edge of digital intelligence. He explains that the digital revolution is not complete since it hasn't touched the familiar objects around us. He believes that sensing, computing and communications technology belong in clothing and furniture much more than on desktops.

Developing beyond today's information technologies is going to require more capable devices embedded more finely into our environment, the means to link them into local and global systems, and new kinds of applications that can use these resources to solve outstanding problems. Dr Gershenfeld will discuss the research supporting this vision, and emerging practical solutions.
