Obituary

I was saddened to learn of the death of Bob Turnbull who had been enjoying his retirement after holding technical, marketing and sales positions with Alpha Metals. Those of us in the business, for more years than we wish to remember, were impressed with Bob's enthusiasm. His technical presentations were always professional, humorous and enjoyable. None of us fully appreciated the preparation he put into these events.

Bob was born in Gateshead in 1921 and attained a degree in chemistry at Durham University, UK, where he employed his ethos of working hard and playing hard. Although working hard by day he was never known to work after five o'clock. This was when he would visit the pub and earn his keep playing the piano.

Bob worked up and down the country as an industrial chemist, for Kodak, GEC and eventually with Alpha when they were based at Ewell. He set high standards of industriousness, performance and integrity. His outgoing personality won him many friends and he was well regarded and respected by all.

He had many humorous anecdotes and I particularly recall one being on his time spent in a TNT factory at the start of his working life!

His influence endures and our respects go to Jayne and family.
