Calling electronics SMEs: are you lead-free?
Calling electronics SMEs: are you lead-free?
Keyword: Lead-free soldering
Electronics SMEs may have less than 3 years to ensure that they are lead-free. July 2006 is the deadline set by the soon to be published European RHS directive for many electronic products to be lead-free. At the same time, according to a survey conducted by Netregs, only 17 per cent of SMEs interviewed have an environmental management system in place and only 18 per cent are able to mention any environmental legislation which applies to them.
The first EU project, coordinated by trade association Abelia in Norway, called GREENROSE and is currently at the proposal stage. If this project is approved it will commence in early 2004. The lead-free technology message will be spread through trade associations and chambers of commerce across Europe. The aim of the project is to distribute information to SMEs through seminars,CD-ROMS and booklets, and to set up "Virtual Academies" for access to research facilities and training.
