The Electronics Assembly Systems Division (EA) of Siemens's Automation and Drives Group (A&D) has won second place in the competition for the “Best Factory/ Industrial Excellence Award 2006”. The contest was hosted by France's INSEAD business school and the Production Management Department of Germany's WHU Otto Beisheim School of Management. With its SIPLACE machines,Siemens EA is the world's leading manufacturer of surface mount technology machines and solutions. The Siemens division received top grades in the categories Operational Strategy, Product Development, Supply Chain Management,Service Management and Partner Management. The Industrial Excellence Award 2006 will be presented on October 10 and 11 during a management conference of INSEAD and WHU in Nuremberg.

The success of globally operating electronics equipment manufacturers depends on the one hand on the volatile business of the electronics industries and on the other hand on the rapid availability of customized top- quality placement solutions including software and services. These requirements demand highly flexible and complex organisational structures, and Siemens EA impressed the judging panel with its exceptionally efficient processes in its global value chain and the highly systematic approach of its management team.

No name just one example, Siemens EA was able to shorten its cycle time to less than half within 2 years. “With the global deployment of productivity- increasing methodologies and a shared knowledge base, we can increase our productivity by at least ten percent each year,” confirms Günter Schindler and Jörg Cwojdzinski, who are in charge of production and logistics. “We constantly focus on all the factors, be it customer satisfaction, quality or short delivery times. Only if we fine- tune all these factors in their entirety will we be able to remain globally competitive with our SIPLACE placement machines.”

The SIPLACE organisation with its tight network of 75 service locations, 15 training centres, five technical support centres, three R&D centres, two assembly centres and three SIPLACE factories in Germany and Singapore is continually expanding its global presence. By globally positioning its locations in the US, Singapore, China and Germany, SIPLACE is able to take advantage of synergy effects and quickly adapt to rapidly changing regional markets.
