Purpose

The blended/hybrid learning model, a combination of onsite and online learning modalities formulated by relevant pedagogies, gained popularity in recent time, and the publication counts are showing a rising trend. In its relatively short history, this model has attracted much attention in the educational landscape. In this context, the main aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review of blended/hybrid learning to comprehend the global trend of scientific publications on emerging technologies in hybrid/blended learning in the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), the over researched areas, uncovered areas and future directions of research in this field.

Design/methodology/approach

A bibliometric analysis was conducted to investigate the published output relevant to hybrid/blended learning using Scopus database, R studio and Biblioshiny software.

Findings

In brief, the results indicated that interest in blended learning research has remained steady in the initial years, and this interest peaked during the COVID-19 pandemic, when blended learning was applied to meet the new needs that emerged. There are quantitative studies in this field, whereas absence of much qualitative studies is matter to be concerned.

Originality/value

This study stands among the pioneers that analysed the approach of hybrid learning in HEIs. The findings are expected to benefit stakeholders involved in using blended learning in both learning organizations and higher education sectors in which instructors use integrated technology and online learning materials with traditional face-to-face classroom activities. This study identifies current research interest and the potential future research direction in the field of hybrid/blended learning.
