Southern Africa is now on the threshold of large‐scale discovery by the outside world. Despite its elaborate system of communications and its modern cities, Africa as a whole is still largely the Dark Continent. Here in Africa and, more particularly in Southern Africa, is to be found the last frontiers of undisturbed nature; and where the tide of civilisation has ventured into the fastness of this vast Continent paradox piles on paradox. Here is duplicated on smaller scale the skyscrapers of Manhattan; the English charm of secluded cities; the sophistication of European boulevards; the industrial versatility of Pennsylvania and Birmingham; the scrublands of Texas and the rolling pastures of Sussex; the flamboyance of Florida and the classic beauty of the Mediterranean. But it is the real Africa unchanged and unspoilt that makes the strongest call across the seas to restless, energetic America or sun‐starved Britain and the jaded millions of Western Europe.
