A profile of the Spanish paint industry, 2nd edition

Spain is a million-tonne paint market and the country with the highest per capita paint consumption in Western Europe. These are two of the key findings in IRL's latest report, A Profile of the Spanish Paint Industry,which presents a detailed look at one of Europe's most important but least researched paint sectors.

The Spanish paint and coatings market has been estimated at 1,095,000 tonnes in 2006 and will demonstrate only mature growth of 2.5 per cent pa until 2011,when the market may reach 1.2 million tonnes. Based on a population of 44 million, per capita paint demand in Spain is higher than that of Germany since its population is almost half as much, but consumes only one-third less paint (Figure 1). The strong industrial economy and the construction sector contribute significantly to both industrial and architectural paint demand.

From among the different segments in Spain, IRL's findings have included:

  • the decorative paint market tends to be led by the north of the country which is wealthier and more design- led, while southern Spain tends to be more traditional in its outlook;

  • the general industrial sector is likely to shift towards high-solids formulations in the short term and water-based coatings in the long-term;

  • powder coatings and furniture finishes producers are both likely to find some changes in their markets as the Spanish furniture producers alter their designs to compete more effectively with Chinese imports;

  • manufacturers of coatings for plastics are likely to find growth in the construction sector;

  • automotive refinishes are expected to witness greater competition in the medium range offerings; and

  • windpower will be an important driver for the protective coatings sector.

Terry Knowles, Business Manager at IRL and Author of the report said, “The mood across the Spanish paint industry at the moment is one of great caution. This is a sector which tends to be governed by tradition and fragmentation, two factors which tend to work against rapid change – yet Spain is on the edge of precisely that. Currently, Spain is adjusting to the challenges of the EU's legislation on VOCs which will come into effect from January 2007, while the broader picture suggests that the industry demonstrates a clear demand for new technologies from abroad. The construction sector is expected to slow, which will turn the spotlight on the DIY market as the decorative segment looks for new markets and applications.”
