Mitutoyo (UK)'s (Tel: +44(0) 1264 353123) commitment to education in engineering has been underlined by a joint initiative with Open College Network (OCN). To satisfy a demand for the company's existing metrology training courses to be linked to a recognised qualification, a series of metrology qualification modules has been created. Each module provides an OCN credit which is recognised by all further education and higher education institutes as well as by employers.

The OCN for Central England, based in Warwick, has the overall aim of promoting access to education and training at all levels, including the opportunity for adults to gain credits for their learning wherever it takes place. Teaming up with Mitutoyo to promote engineering measurement, a number of accredited Metrology Training Courses now take place at Mitutoyo's Institute of Metrology in Warwick.

All levels of student are catered for including those requiring foundation skills and those needing competencies to an "A"-level or NVQ3 standard. Basic Dimensional Metrology,Precision Measurement, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, as well as Statistical Process Control modules are all provided by Mitutoyo. Assessment is carried out through verbal interaction with course tutors, completion of various tasks and a completed log of work based on activities which demonstrate knowledge and practical application of module skills.
