Social responsibility in the new industrial revolution

An interesting thought experiment to undertake is to ask what would have happened in the last two hundred years if there had been no Industrial Revolution? Perhaps more pertinently, what would the world be like if the society had been aware of the consequences of the first Industrial Revolution.
