1992 and All That!

The Food Safety Act in the UK will have dramatic effects on the food industry, but it will appear insignificant against the effects of the Single European Market. The laws that protect consumers and manufacturers in individual member states are in danger of being undermined, unless the EC laws that replace national laws provide equivalent protection. There is also concern that law enforcement takes a low priority in some member states. A number of recent legal cases illustrate that point, as well as historical incidences of food standards falling when specific restraints are removed, particularly as regards food content and labelling. A complete rethink is required on food policy, the law and its enforcement throughout Europe.
