European Community legislation dealing with food safety and ensuring a high standard of public health protection is discussed. When the trade barriers are removed in 1992, this will increase competition throughout the Community. Clear and co‐ordinated leads will have to be shown by member states towards industry self‐regulation dealing with trade standards and codes of practice. This could be achieved by National forums integrating with a European forum to discuss and implement the various regulations required to deal with food safety and protection.
