The Future for Fruit and Vegetable Distribution in Russia

The fruit and vegetable sector in Russia requires a completely remodelled distribution system. The traditional supply structure consists of a multi‐layered production base with large‐scale state farms and thousands of individuals growing crops on small plots. The greatest distribution problem exists at the storage, processing and retailing stage. A crisis now exists in most Russian cities where the command system has broken down but nothing has emerged to take its place. Requires aspects of the Western system including the concept of wholesale marketing and the presence of trading/distribution companies. Despite much discussion and consultancy advice progress remains modest and short‐ term problems of adaption are proving to be immense.
