Effective training of a graduate or a technician from overseas often depends upon an adequate training programme with reasonably attainable targets. The reasonableness of a programme in turn depends upon the accuracy of an assessment of the trainee; of his aptitudes and personal qualities; of his knowledge and of gaps in it that would be critical for his course; of his adaptability to new environment; and, not least, of his understanding of the English language, especially the spoken word. Updating of a programme to take account of current progress and any changed circumstance is as important for training as for a construction project.
