These notes refer mainly to India, where the Author has worked as a professor of civil engineering since 1961; he had taught for a few months in Nigeria.

The trained engineer, the end product of our educational efforts, should have very much the same qualities wherever he has to work. He must have:

(a) a reasonable knowledge of engineering principles, with enough > mathematics and science to enable him to develop and apply those

principles;

(b) an enquiring mind, which does not accept anything without investi-

gation, and the ability to make a fresh approach to what has been established practice;
