MR J. G. HAYMAN-JOYCE, Livesey & Henderson

The processes of deposition and erosion in an estuary are complex, and these are influenced in each estuary by many factors, which may include rapidly changing fluvial discharge and supply of sediment (as can occur in many tropical estuaries). An understanding of the underlying mechanisms of siltation is essential for a quantitative understanding of the estuarial regime and the pattern of siltation and, hence, the prediction of the effect of new works.

From 1977 to 1979, Livesey § Henderson were engaged in the study, design and supervision of construction of the first stage of a new fishing port at Esmeraldas in Ecuador. They had earlier been engaged in the development of the commercial port at Esmeraldas. A team from the HRS, led by Mr Odd, assisted in the study of the regime of the estuary, and of the effect of construction of the fishing port on siltation, particularly in the commercial port.
