Introduction

The Anglian coast epitomises all the challenges of coastal management. It is exposed to the

fastest net sea level rise in the UK. Erosion of cliffs is threatening villages, but also provides

sediment to beaches further down the coast where it prevents erosion of other places. There are

large low-lying areas where we rely on flood defences to protect settlements, infrastructure,

agricultural land and brackish habitats. However, the presence of these defences may prevent the

natural landward movement of the coast in response to sea level rise, which can cause pressure

on those same defences and threaten important coastal habitats.
