Introduction

Adaptation lies at the heart of our approach to managing the coast, recognising uncertainty

and the need to adapt to the dynamic system that we are managing. Adapting is as relevant to

our thinking about how we manage the coast, and in adapting to our changing understanding,

as it is to the way in which we actually adapt to the change.

This paper takes a long term perspective, both looking to the past as to where we have come

from and looking forward to a future that remains cloaked in many uncertainties; uncertainties

that have led some to question whether we can plan for 100 years and beyond. The paper
