Introduction

The village of Borth, located on the west coast of Wales in Cardigan Bay (Figure 1), was

originally a small fishing hamlet which has grown into a holiday resort due to its wide

beaches, sand dunes, good bathing water and visitor attractions. The prevailing south

westerly weather and gently sloping beach also provides good conditions for surfing and the

main industry within Borth is now tourism. The beach is currently (2011) protected by an

extensive, but ageing, groyne system with a timber breastwork to strengthen the cobble (a

coarse gravel-sized rock material) ridge at the beach crest. The standard of the defence
