This chapter outlines the aims and objectives of the book. The main aim is to identify to both clients and contractors the differing functions and uses of the programme in the NEC family of contracts. The aim of this book is to place the programme into context in an NEC contract to allow clients and contractors to put in place the procedures and resources to maximise the benefits of using the contract. The book concentrates on the NEC4 Engineering and Construction Contract (NEC4 ECC), but the book also considers other contracts in the family where detailed programming is required such as the NEC4 Professional Service Contract (NEC4 PSC), the NEC4 Term Service Contract (NEC4 TSC) and the NEC4 Facilities Management Contract (NEC4 FMC). As will be apparent from the following chapters programming is central to the NEC4 ECC contract. The book will also consider the implications of not putting in place and following the procedures.
