SESSION 3. FREIGHT TRANSPORT
MR TURVEY, Paper 6 I wish to develop four themes
(a) that the growth of road freight within the EEC is simply repeating the trend seen in the UK for many years past
(b) that many of the obstacles to optimum efficiency of road freight are self-imposed and man-made
(c) that a single £2000 billion European Community Market (3005 billion ECUs) demands and justifies a matching European infrastructure
(d) the question: do those in the UK, 14 years after entry into the Common Market,' think and act like good Europeans?
In the UK road accounts for 106 billion t/km carried equivalent to 62% of all movements. Inland waterways and coastal shipping account for 25%, rail 7% and pipelines 6%.
