A back-propagation neural network model for calculating the values of the factor of safety in slopes is prop osed. A large number of factors of safety calculated using nonlinear finite element method is identified as input attributes. These input data include combination of different slope angles, heights and different soil properties. Outputs of this neural network model are compared with the calculated results of other models. Results indicate that neural network models can successfully and satisfactorily be used in obtaining the safety factors.
