The paper considers the geological history of the Belfast area, and describes in detail the glacial processes, which formed the soliflucted material overlying a significant area of north and west Belfast. An upper and a lower soliflucted layer have been identified and the paper describes the two layers in detail. The difficulties in identifying each layer and its distinct properties are also discussed. The paper identifies the zone of instability in the area based on a large number of site investigations conducted in the region.
