As part of their responsibilities, the successor bodies to the Nature Conservancy Council in Great Britain will be required to assess proposals for capital dredging and the disposal of material and advise the appropriate authorities on the likely implications for nature conservation of these activities. The statutory framework for nature conservation in Great Britain, including provisions for the protection of sites and species, and the consultation procedure for dredging and dumping are described. Advice on dredging and dumping operations is based on the appraisal of the nature conservation resource of Britain's marine environment, literature review, case studies and field observations.
