Abstract
Three partner organizations, Albuquerque Public Schools, the University of New Mexico College of Education, and the Albuquerque Teachers Federation collaborated to co-create a teacher residency, the Albuquerque Teacher Residency Partnership (ATRP). In this chapter we describe the unique setting of this partnership within a majority–minority state and school district and our learnings regarding teaching immigrants, refugees, and newcomers in K–12 community schools. We also describe (a) the experiences of our schoolbased partners in addressing ways in which immigrant students learn, (b) the utilization of extant resources to help students and their families, (c) the successes achieved and challenges faced by residents in teaching immigrant students, and (d) our perception of resources needed to best support immigrant students.
