In this chapter, the author explores tensions within an equity-centered project conducted with first-generation college students at a small university. This collaborative, called Flip the Script was a collaborative group of eight students who told their educational stories through art media during a workshop series with the goal of finding ways to better meet the needs of first generation college students. Both students and faculty participated in dialogue and planned for change to address the challenges and visions of students. The concept of REFLEXability—as the collective reflexes, flexibility, and abilities in a group—emerged. REFLEXability was part of the process and outcome of the tensions of collaborative work toward equity-oriented change. This chapter provides an explanation of the process of this project and examples of REFLEXability.
