Cement is an indispensable constituent for all sectors of the building industry, from residential building to large infrastructural projects. It is therefore produced and used in large quantities, about 175 million tonnes in the EU and 1.75 billion tonnes worldwide. Consequently huge amounts of materials and energy are needed. CEMBUREAU – The European Cement Association – plays a co-ordination role in many of those initiatives. This paper will briefly deal with the following issues (i) substitution of fossil fuels with alternative fuels, (ii) European standardisation and use of alternative materials (iii) development of Best Available Techniques for the abatement of emissions (iv) Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (v) fire safety of concrete structures (vi) life cycle assessment of concrete
