Increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide and other gases in the earth's atmosphere are expected to cause increased warming of the atmosphere. This, in turn, will have several effects of possible importance to the design of coastal structures, the foremost and most investigated effect being a significant rise in eustatic sea level. These effects are briefly discussed and the available projections of sea level rise for the next century are presented. Then, the important impacts of sea level rise on the design of coastal structures are presented as are the specific impacts on the various classes of structures. Finally, two case studies that demonstrate the potential impact of sea level rise are summarized.
