Michael Kompf's long and interesting career was totally spent at Brock University where he began teaching in 1985. He was then 2 years into doctoral study at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) – University of Toronto where he completed his degree in 1989. Studying at OISE put him in touch with the founders of ISATT, so, in a very real way, he was involved with ISATT from the beginning. He noted in his history of ISATT (Kompf & Rust, 2013),
That initial enthusiasm never diminished. Michael championed ISATT from then on recognizing it as a unique venue for young scholars like himself to engage in thoughtful, respectful interaction with some of the leading scholars of the day who were thinking out loud, as it were, on critical issues around teachers, teaching, and teacher thinking: “The juxtaposition of collaborative efforts in research, cross-disciplinary studies, and generational cusps among the professoriate distinguished the group” (Kompf & Rust, 2013, p. 16). He went on to serve four terms as chair of ISATT (1999–2001 and 2003–2009) and four terms as the editor of the ISATT Newsletter which he initiated in his fourth term as chair.
