Introduction

The coastline and low lying land within the Draft Folkestone to Cliff End Flood and Erosion

Management Strategy (Halcrow, 2008) includes one of the largest areas at risk from flooding

in southern England. This area, around the Dungeness peninsular on the south coast of Kent,

includes over 13,500 homes and 25,000ha of agricultural land. The strategy recommends a

'hold the line' policy for this section of coastline, which comprises a mixture of managed

shingle beaches, sand dunes, sea walls, revetments and earth embankments.

The frontage between High Knocke to Dymchurch Redoubt (Dymchurch) lies on the

southern Kent coast between Rye and Folkestone (see fig 1 below) and forms part of the
