Introduction
The urban frontage at Felixstowe between the War Memorial in Undercliff Road West and
Jacob's Ladder has been affected by long term beach lowering (Figure 1). Levels have fallen
so dramatically in recent years that some of the groynes have been undermined and the
frontage is at risk of flooding from overtopping and failure of the seawall (Plate 1).
To counter the ongoing erosion Suffolk Coastal District Council commissioned a Project
Appraisal Report (PAR) to review the long term management of the frontage and to apply for
funds to support the scheme.
