In this chapter we consider the modeling of traffic signal control. This is an enormous subject with very many complications. So as to allow a self-contained account which is specific enough to be informative, we have made many choices which might well appear as oversimplifications; without the simplifying choices the chapter would have been much longer, much more complicated, and much less informative.
The chapter seeks to reduce the distance which currently lies between traffic signal control modeling and transport planning modeling. For this reason the chapter begins by giving a practical example of the way traffic signal control may be used to deliver public transport benefits.
